Clearing the Path to an Academic Fellowship in China
Case Synopsis
After being selected for an academic fellowship to teach English abroad in China, our client hit a major barrier due to a marijuana possession conviction from earlier in his life. China conducts strict background checks and has rigid requirements in order to work with children. Consequently, his conviction from his younger years put his entire academic future with the program at risk.
Shortly after learning of the roadblock, he contacted our firm, and we began to work to seal the marijuana charge. After a conference with the district attorney to explain the case’s specifics with the relevant mitigating factors, they joined our position to consent to the sealing. With the matter sealed, our client was able to enter China to teach English to students there. He did not have to forego the academic fellowship and was free to further his academic career.
